About the photographer

Hermione McCosh has worked as a professional photographer for over ten years. She has lived in Paris, London and now she is based in the north of England. She is most inspired by the real, the normal and the everyday, which is not necessarily beautiful. Her work is often galvanised by what the light is doing. A normal, common object can be made fascinating by the golden light of the evening.

About the photograph

Crossing in Trinidad was taken on the Fuji X100 (ISO 320, F8, SS 1/450). It is a very good example of Hermione McCosh’s style, capturing a scene with an added person somewhere in the frame. The fact the boy was wearing a red t-shirt helps him to stand out. He is walking so there is movement added to the image. It is a moment in time which is won’t happen again in the same way. The rule of thirds is apparent and the railway line helps your eyes lead into the photograph as well as the line from the ditch coming from the bottom right hand corner. These lines crossing almost mirrors the sign post cross. Similar shapes are pleasing to the eye.
